“I randomly agreed to my sister’s invitation to climb Mount Kinabalu in 2013. I had never tried hiking or mountaineering before and didn’t know what to expect. I only knew I must put myself to the test. After successfully scaling Mount Kinabalu, I became somewhat addicted to the activity. My proudest achievement so far is conquering the magnificent Mount Rinjani in Lombok. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, hiking for four days and going without a shower for three days! I can’t really explain why I chose to go through the torture, but I knew that the best view is always from the top, and to getting to the top involves a lot of hard work – mentally and physically. Your body can fail you in more ways than one and there are multiple risks involved. The trick is to imbed in your mind the thought that you have already reached the summit, and trust me, you’ll eventually reach the summit no matter how arduous the climb is. Positive energy and determination will get you up there!” -Marcella Gider, Senior Corporate Communications Officer Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #humansofcurtin #mountkinabalu #mountrinjani #mountainclimbing #determination #willpower #curtin #curtinmalaysia photo 101 14 0 2 0 0 117 2 9 128 2017-10-17

“I was casually checking my mailbox when I came across an email from the University Life Department about the 8th University Scholar Leadership Symposium or USLS in Bangkok. I decided to try my luck and was one of the lucky few chosen to represent our university. “The event surpassed all my expectations. There were over a thousand delegates from close to 80 countries gathered at the United Nations Conference Centre to discuss humanitarian issues. I was simply overwhelmed by the experience, surrounded by so many bright minds from around the world, all sharing the same ideals and goals for a better world. “I learned something new every day of the symposium, from listening to the very experienced speakers and volunteers who’ve been doing community work for years. I learned what it takes to be a strong, independent leader, and how important it is to serve those in need. “There were some really inspirational individuals like Mariza from South Africa, who has a speech defect which made her the target of bullying when she was younger, but she overcame all that and is now researching how to create food full of amino acids for unprivileged kids in Mozambique to make sure they grow up healthy. There was also Antonio from Italy, who is almost blind since birth but is now a professor of music and computer programmer. “The highlight was our visit to a local school. We spent time playing with kids, teaching them to make paper aeroplanes and some simple English, sharing meals with them, and just having a great time with them. I will never forget the wonderful smiles and special moments we had with the kids. I hope they’ll remember us for a long time to come too.” – Sergey Begishev (Turkmenistan), Petroleum Engineering student Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #humansofcurtin #turkmenistan #petroleumengineering #engineering #USLS #curtinmalaysia #bangkok photo 41 3 0 0 0 0 44 2 0 46 2017-10-03

“I’m a mechanical engineering student. My initial interest was actually in chemical engineering because I thought it would be like chemistry class in school and fun working with all kinds of chemicals. However, I finally decided on mechanical engineering because I think I will have a better chance of securing a suitable job in my hometown, Penang, with a mechanical engineering qualification. “I’m always keen to learn new things. I love reading online articles related to mechanical engineering to enhance my knowledge. One of the challenges I face is public speaking but I’m gradually improving my communication skills here at university. I encourage my fellow students to study hard but don’t stress yourself out by overthinking. “Nine years ago, I moved from Singapore to Miri with my husband when he got a job in the oil and gas industry here. I was delighted to be able to land a job as a lecturer at Curtin Malaysia and carry on my teaching career here. “I am a recipient of the 2014 Curtin Award for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching under the Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning category, but I can’t say I have a special talent for teaching. I’m just passionate about discovering and trying different innovative teaching methods to help my students learn and understand better. “To many people, physics is a difficult subject but I love to think up simple ways to explain things to my students. It brings me great joy and satisfaction to see their faces light up whenever they finally grasp a concept. “Being in Borneo, nature is right at my doorstep. I’ve trekked mountains and caves, scuba-dived among beautiful corals and marine life, and strolled along the pristine beaches here. The peace and tranquility of this place is very alluring. “I grew up around the world, but I am a proud Bangladeshi. I have been athletic all my life, playing professional basketball at 16 years of age and donning the Bangladeshi national colours for the first time at 18. Basketball was my life then. I used to eat, sleep and breathe basketball. When I joined Curtin Malaysia back in 2012, I used to fly back and forth to play basketball back in Bangladesh, but when I was 21, I tore my anterior cruciate ligament, which ended my professional career. “I was really beat up for a while but then I came across something I always used to make fun of back in Bangladesh. A friend of mine asked me in to be a volunteer for a Model UN conference on campus. I took a liking to it and that following year, I joined the organising team for the next conference and I also started participating in MUN conferences. Now, I am one of the founding members of the Borneo Model United Nations Conference and the organising chairperson for the 2017 conference, the biggest international MUN conference in Malaysia. “Earlier this year, I was asked to lead the Team Bangladesh delegation to the WFUNA International MUN Conference and delivered a speech on world peace in front of 800 students at the United Nations General Assembly hall in New York. It was a proud moment sharing the same stage with the likes of Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin and Fidel Castro before me. “My next step in life? Working towards being a representative of Bangladesh at the UN General Assembly and speaking on behalf of the people of my country as a diplomat!” -Shaikh Tahmid Hassin, Mass Communication student. “I started learning Sarawak’s cultural dances more than 10 years ago in secondary school. Since then, I’ve been performing at weddings or dinner events in and around Miri. My favourite dances are those of the Iban and Orang Ulu. The movements are slow and soft, and each hand gesture and body turn very precise. This requires the dancer to remain graceful throughout the performance. Besides the graceful dance routines, the traditional costumes we wear are very elaborate and exquisite. It’s not easy to wear them as they are rather heavy, particularly the ‘ngepan Iban’. “Currently, I’m the advisor to Ilham Santubong, a Curtin Malaysia dance group founded by a former colleague. There are more than 10 of us in the group but I plan to attract more members, including international students, by conducting dance workshops and at the same time, create greater understanding and appreciation of Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage. I foresee bigger things for Ilham Santubong, but for now, we’ll just like to focus on improving our techniques and showmanship.” -Dian Piesesha Sandy, Assistant HR Officer Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia here: #humansofcurtin #sarawak #culture #heritage #culturaldance #Iban #OrangUlu #curtin #curtinmalaysia photo 85 3 0 1 0 0 89 1 1 91 2017-11-09

“I was very privileged to be an ambassador for Curtin Malaysia at the 8th University Scholar Leadership Symposium or USLS in Bangkok. It was a real eye-opener for me. I learned how the world and humankind can be very cruel and unforgiving. I came to the conclusion that I wasn’t any different from millions of people out there who lack caring and compassion for the needy and downtrodden. I came away wanting to do more to help make the world a better place. “I learned that despite all the tragic events the world is experiencing, there is still hope for a better world. We were shown many examples of how love and compassion can transcend hardship and strife by the speakers at the conference. They taught us to be selfless, to be humble and kind to others. Their words completely changed my perception of the world and humanity. I came to believe that “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile”.” – Usama Moazam (Pakistan), Petroleum Engineering student Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia here: #humansofcurtin #curtinmalaysia #USLS #bangkok #humanitarian #conference photo 48 4 0 0 0 0 52 2 2 56 2017-11-16
“If someone had asked me what I wanted to do when I was 16, studying business was definitely not the answer. Yet, here I am taking Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in public relations and management. Since I was a young girl, my ambition was to be a veterinarian because I’m very passionate about animals. However, I believe that it’s not a must to do what you love, so long as you can accept that reality. I was a science stream student back in high school but was encouraged to study commerce instead. In the beginning, I had doubts about majoring in PR and management. The transition was a real struggle but I soon discovered I really love writing and interacting with others. Consequently, towards the end of my first year, two of my best units were PR and management! It made me realise that I did not choose the wrong path and the current course I am taking is meant for me.” –Janice Ng, Public Relations and Management student Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia here: #humansofcurtin #business #commerce #publicrelations #PR #management #curtin #curtinmalaysia photo 82 6 0 0 0 0 88 2 3 93 2017-11-20

“Apart from teaching at Curtin Malaysia, I have discovered scuba diving. Curtin Malaysia provided me a platform to establish Curtin Dive Club Malaysia along with fellow divers Dr. Stephanie Chan and PhD student Lim Wee Teck, who are also members of the university. Curtin Dive Club assists both staff and students to get PADI scuba diving certification, at the same time expanding the diving community on campus. As one of the university’s certified divers, I’m one of the very few people who have explored the Miri-Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park just off Miri. In May 2015, I was certified as a reef check diver for Reef Check Malaysia along with Dr. Chan and Wee Teck. “Ever since I was young, I have always been intrigued by the underwater world which covers more than 70 percent of the earth. My current favourites are Portmeirion, Royal Albert, Spode Blue Italian, and a Malaysian brand, Vantage. Drinking tea from my Royal Albert set makes me feel like the Queen of England! My collections are proudly displayed in cabinets and on the walls of my house. Once in a while, I would use them on special occasions like birthdays or gatherings with family and friends. The Portmeirion sets are very practical and durable, so I tend to use them on a daily basis. But there were incidents when my family members accidentally broke them. It annoyed me at first, but over time, I realised that life is not perfect and decided to just enjoy them while they lasted!” -Servia Gindi, Human Resources Officer Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #humansofcurtin #dinnersets #lplates #crockery #collections #curtin #curtinmalaysia photo 53 6 0 2 0 0 61 1 9 71 2017-12-16

“For the first time in my life, attending an international conference changed my life! Attending the 8th University Scholar Leadership Symposium or USLS in Bangkok was something I would never forget. Now, whenever someone asks me how USLS was, I would undoubtedly reply that it was simply amazing and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “I really enjoyed the experience, spending time with all the wonderful delegates from around the world and taking part in the different activities. I befriended the shiest but most adorably mischievous boy named Pie at an orphanage we visited. And I was really enamored by the hustle and bustle of Bangkok with its roads filled with cars, motorbikes and tuk-tuks, not to mention the great food that would satisfy any foodie. “USLS broadened my perspectives in many ways. Meeting and discussing world issues with other youth delegates convinced me that the youth of today have a big role to play in making the world a better place. Everyone was so passionate and engaged in discussions, which really inspired and motivated me. I truly felt as though I was a not just a citizen of Malaysia but a global citizen. I have come to believe that there is always light at the end of the tunnel, and no matter how small your efforts are in your own community, it somehow contributes to a greater, global goal.” –Cheah Kah Kei (Kayla), Accounting and Finance student Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #conference #USLS #bangkok #curtinmalaysia #humanitarian #curtin photo 52 0 0 0 0 0 52 3 3 58 2017-12-21

“I have been a traditional dance enthusiast my entire life. I started dancing for fun at first and am now doing it semi-professionally. Dancing defines my personality. It has taught me to be disciplined and to control my emotions. It has given me strength. It is an art form which sets you free, lets you be creative, gives you confidence and helps you find your hidden self. “Dance, especially the classical form, is inexhaustible. You can approach it with a new outlook each time even when you’ve performed it a hundred times. When you dance, you have to put aside your personal feelings and be really focused. You have to follow the music and the beat, memorise all the steps, and at the same time, embrace the beauty of the dance. “In today’s world, one should definitely learn one of the art forms, be it dance or music, as it can be a great stress reliever. It’s hard to describe the feeling dancing gives you when you perform. I’m glad I’ve had the opportunity to learn this beautiful art form and I hope I can continue learning it and teach the next generation. -Ingrid Gwendolene, IT Helpdesk officer Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #humansofcurtin #traditionaldance #classicaldance #dancing #curtin #curtinmalaysia photo 57 4 0 1 0 0 62 1 0 63 2018-01-03

"It was a difficult decision to further my studies, doing a double major and getting a Bachelor of Commerce degree, at Curtin Malaysia. English was a challenge for me at first but I must say I have improved a lot since joining Curtin Malaysia. I knew I would be homesick as, coming from Kuching, I’d never been away from home to study before. I was also not a very active person since high school and wondered how I’d fit into the hectic campus lifestyle. “When I started at Curtin Malaysia, I made a real effort to change and indulge in university life. In my first year, I worked on improving my English and public speaking. Giving presentations as part of my course helped me develop my communication skills and be more confident when talking to others. So, studying at Curtin Malaysia has not only helped me enhance my understanding of business but also allowed me to learn many valuable soft skills. “The saying ‘If you want something you’ve never had, then you’ve got to do something you’ve never done’ really holds true for me now. I am always looking to have a more active and really fun student experience.” –Florence Lee Su Yuan, Accounting and Finance student Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia here: #humansofcurtin #commerce #business #kuching #sarawak #curtin #curtinmalaysia photo 69 5 0 0 0 0 74 2 4 80 2018-01-09

“I was once in a class where I thought some students were rather selfish, always doing their own thing and not bothering to help others. On one occasion, one of my classmates didn’t have a ride home so I offered to send him home. This seemed to surprise some of my friends who wondered why I was being so nice. “When I entered undergraduate studies at Curtin Malaysia, learning proved to be a lot tougher. My classmates and I faced difficulties with of some of our units but we started helping each other get through them. Nowadays, whenever I find it hard to understand something, my friends will readily offer to help and I really appreciate that. “So, for those who’re always waiting for help or wish something good to happen, why don’t you start first and be an influencer? “How have I changed since joining Curtin Malaysia? For one thing, I’ve become more self-confident. The culture of inclusiveness and being part of a big family and encouraging students to actively engage in student life at this campus has turned a once shy and self-conscious girl from Zimbabwe into a much more confident and assertive global citizen. Let’s say I found my path to confidence, or rather my ‘runway’ to confidence, here. During the annual International Festival or iFest on campus, I participated in the fashion show and proudly showcased my culture on stage. “Upon graduating, I plan to open a coffee house that not only serves food and beverages but one specially built with cubicles for customers to have private conversations. These cubicles can also be used for ‘consultation sessions’ where I can talk or simply lend an ear to customers who are having a bad day. “I plan to join ‘Befrienders KL’, an NGO that offers assistance and support to people who are facing difficulties in their lives. To achieve my aim, I plan to gain experience by working in a coffee house first. I have also been experimenting with a variety of pasta recipes that I hope to put on my coffee house menu in the future. “I am also considering, after I graduate from my current studies, to take up studies in psychology and become a certified counsellor. For now, I’m gathering information from our experienced campus counsellors about psychology and consultation. “There’s certainly a lot I’d like to achieve but I believe even the loftiest goals are not hard to achieve if you start planning early.” –Sabrina Liew Yzen Yzeing, Bachelor of Commerce student Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #humansofcurtin #university #coffeehouse #foodandbeverage #graduation #psychology #counselling #curtin #curtinmalaysia Contributor: Katy Wong photo 73 9 0 2 0 0 84 3 11 98 2018-02-02

“As a new student travelling far away from Zimbabwe for the first time, I wanted to make sure the place I was heading to was peaceful, enjoyable and safe. Curtin Malaysia certainly is such a place. “The weather in Miri is pleasant. I’m into sports and Curtin Malaysia has really good sports and recreation facilities. On top of that, there are student clubs that can help students improve their leadership and communication skills. All these have made the transition to life here relatively easy for me. “As an engineering student, I enjoy being taught by my highly-qualified and experienced lecturers. “Singing and dancing have been my passion since I was 10 years old when my father handed me a participation form for a singing competition and asked if I wanted to give it a try. Without hesitation, I took up the challenge and to my surprise, I didn’t experience any stage-fright at all. In fact, I discovered I enjoyed performing on stage from that first experience. Since then, I have taken part in numerous performances and competitions. “Whenever I get the opportunity to perform before large audiences, I see it as a platform to grow and improve. Through dancing, I have learned to be more understanding towards others as it involves a great deal of teamwork. “At times, criticism can be rather discouraging but on a positive note, it can help us recognise our weaknesses and strive to do better. “It’s been a year since I graduated from Curtin Malaysia with a Commerce degree in Accounting & Finance. I have since begun a job handling the accounts at Seratim, a company with a variety of interests, from timber to restaurants and manpower supply. Working in a corporate environment has taught me much, including the importance of discipline, empathy and emotional maturity. “My passion is in writing and I write for ORKED MAG, an online indie art magazine that encourages freedom of expression among its contributors, feature writers and artists from around Sabah. It has been both liberating and emotionally fulfilling. “I developed an interest in writing again in my fourth year at Curtin Malaysia, and when I say ‘again’, I mean I had actually long buried the notion of being a writer when I entered university. There is a certain practicality and pragmatism to accounting that appealed to me and the idea of writing for a living very quickly faded as I delved into my studies. But student life at Curtin Malaysia is very dynamic and there’s always something new to discover and experience, and I eventually found myself regaining a fervor for writing, inspired by my experiences as a student there. “I guess what I’m trying to say is, Curtin Malaysia didn’t just give me an education; it gave me an experience full of excitement and colour, and the promise of an even brighter future.” –Emily Mary Chin, Accounting & Finance alumni Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia here: #humansofcurtin #curtinmalaysia #commerce #accounting #finance #corporate #sabah #indieart #writing #writer photo 16 1 0 0 0 0 17 1 0 18 2018-03-30

“Hi, I'm Peiying from China and am proud to have graduated from Curtin Malaysia with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting and Banking. My primary goals when joining the university was to gain a new education experience in Malaysia, get a quality Australian education and a world-recognised Curtin degree, and land a great job after graduation. I’m glad I’ve managed to achieve it all, including getting a job as a collection analyst with HSBC Singapore. “As a Curtin student, I gained considerable knowledge and professionalism, and my overall student experience was very fulfilling and memorable. Of course, there were tough times doing a double major and having to fulfill the requirements of both courses. But I’m glad I chose Accounting and Banking as I’ve always wanted to work in the financial sector and the hardship was well worth it. Perseverance and patience in the face of difficulties continues to be the key to my success.” –Zhuang Peiying, Accounting and Banking graduate Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #curtinmalaysia #1inBorneo #humansofcurtin #commerce #accounting #banking photo 43 1 0 0 0 0 44 2 2 48 2018-04-11

“I recently completed a 2-month internship with the Asian Research Institute for Environmental Law in Chiang Mai, Thailand, which was a really amazing experience. I really appreciated the opportunity to be attached with an international research institute, experiencing a work environment that was quite different from what I was accustomed to as a university lecturer. The internship was also a great opportunity for me to gain industry exposure and enhance my research skills. “My work there was both interesting and challenging. I was involved in carrying out an environmental impact assessment of the Mekong region, given my experience in environmental law research. Learning how environmental impact assessments are done in other countries was a real eye-opener, and I was very privileged to work with the director of the research institute himself. I also co-authored a research paper with him and, though my internship has ended, continue to keep in touch with the research institute in my ongoing research.” - Dr Loh Ing Hoe, Law Lecturer, Faculty of Business Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #curtinmalaysia #1inBorneo #humansofcurtin #law #lecturer photo 7 2 0 0 0 0 9 1 0 10 2018-04-21

“For me, there’s no end to learning. When you graduate from university, it doesn’t mean the end of your learning journey. In fact, it is just the beginning. Being a lecturer doesn’t mean that I know everything. I often tell my students that it’s a two-way education where they gain knowledge from me and I learn new things from them. I also learn something new every day from my colleagues, friends, family members and even my pet, Mimi. “Some people have this perception that when you reach a certain age, it’s too late to pick up new skills but I think nothing is impossible if you put your effort into it. Back when I was in boarding school in Kuala Lumpur, I played the double bass despite my tiny size. I’m a mother of five and I started learning piano when I was 38 and swimming at 40. “Lifelong learning not only boosts my self-confidence but also helps me gain fulfilling inner satisfaction. I encourage others to enrich their lives by exploring new things every day. You’ll be surprised to find out just how ‘small’ you are in this universe and start to appreciate life better.” -Siti Kasmah Mohd. “I began my career as a HR junior executive in charge of recruitment and payroll for a company in Kuala Lumpur. It was challenging but I really it, and I soon realised that it was what I wanted to do as a career. “In 2010, I got an offer from the Human Resources Department here at Curtin Malaysia to be in charge of its Compensation & Benefits Section and jumped at the opportunity. In 2013, I was promoted to senior officer in charge the section as well as its Employee Relations section. "Human resources will always be my passion and this year marks my tenth year in the field. “I try to have a good work-life balance and dance fitness is a big part of my life outside of work. Dancing is a great way to work out and I’ve been on a continual weight loss journey since my very first Zumba class. Now, I’m a U-JAM addict and instructor. I completed my U-JAM Instructor workshop last year and I’m glad I also passed my video assessment. "I never thought I would become a fitness instructor, but with the support and encouragement of the U-JAM community, I’m enjoying every minute of it. I really enjoy sharing the joy of dance in my classes. This month, Humans of Curtin is featuring some of our most recent graduates. Hear what they have to say about their Curtin experience, beginning with Yun Jia here… “As Curtin Malaysia attracts students from all over the world, I had the opportunity to work with students of diverse backgrounds and different ways of thinking. Inevitably, it helped me see and adopt new perspectives in learning and problem solving. And as the university has a wide variety of student organisations to suit different interests, I found lots of people with similar passions and hobbies on campus. I also got to sharpen my soft skills at the same time. “As for my course, its well-designed structure and excellent lecturers made the learning experience most interesting and enjoyable. “My course at Curtin Malaysia equipped me with the knowledge and attributes to adapt to a challenging and fast-changing construction environment. As a designer in a geotechnical firm, I’m responsible for designing heavy foundations such as pilings, pile caps and ground beams. “Curtin Malaysia instilled in me a passion for learning that saw me through my course and now helps me in my job. Even though I’ve only been on the job for six months, I am able to carry out reinforced concrete, heavy foundation and ground improvement design work. As communication is crucial in my job, I’m glad that I picked up communications and teamwork skills along the way too and am able to interact with people in different fields and at all levels. “If I had the opportunity to do it all again, Curtin would still be my top choice.” –Yap June Yong, Civil & Construction Engineering graduate, geotechnical designer with Keller (M) Sdn. “My initial university experience was an emotional roller-coaster. Coping with a new life away from home in Maldives was challenging. Thanks to the diverse and very inclusive campus community, the amazing lecturers and all the great friends I’ve made here, I overcame the challenges and have really enjoyed my student life here over the past three years. “The experience encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and explore different interests which led me to become the fitness junkie I am today. Fitness has had a positive impact on both my personal and academic life. “My coursework wasn’t limited to classroom study and exams. There was a lot of practical learning where I was encouraged to interact and engage, from organising events to designing marketing campaigns for actual companies. I continue to apply a lot of the things I learned to my current job as a marketing and business development officer. “I graduated from Curtin with much more than just a degree. “When I graduated from Curtin Malaysia four years ago, I thought my university life was to end there. Student life had been great but I felt perhaps there was more to enjoy. Right after I completed my degree studies, I was really pleased to be able to join the staff as a marketing officer. So, this marks my eighth year with the university as both a student and staff member. “I really enjoy my job. I get to meet and work with all sorts of people and at all levels - future students, parents, high school teachers, agents, vendors and current students. This has really broadened my perspectives as I’m always learning as I work. “The best part is I have opportunities to hone my photography skills, something I picked up as a student. "Coming from Zimbabwe, Curtin Malaysia is like my second home. Its warm, gratifying environment makes me smile as I make my way to campus each morning, excited to face the challenges of the day. As a busy mechanical engineering student, the only free time I really have is during the lunch break each day, but I guess the toil will be worth it in the long run. “When I first joined Curtin Malaysia, I started a degree in Finance and Management. I later realised management wasn’t something I was particularly passionate about. I missed the thrills and challenges accounting offered when I was doing it in my A-Levels. I consulted a few seniors who were pursuing accounting degrees and decided to take up the challenge and changed my degree to Accounting and Finance. “I believe anything is possible if you challenge yourself and work hard. Ever since the change, the difference was very obvious and I feel it’s exactly what I was born to do. My career goal is to be a chartered accountant. “Studying is not the only thing that keeps me going. People think accounting students are boring and all bookworms but I enjoy keeping up to date with world affairs and reading books. “When I first joined Curtin Malaysia, many people asked me why I chose to study here and not at the main campus in Perth. I chose Curtin Malaysia because of its affordability and the fact it offers exactly the same courses and degrees as Curtin in Australia. It is located in Borneo, a very unique place, and in Malaysia, a country not that different from Vietnam where I’m from. So, I’m happy I’m getting the quality Australian education I need, at a cost that will not burden my family, and I’m comfortable in a not too dissimilar Southeast Asian setting and culture. “I remember my first semester here and missing orientation week. As a freshman arriving late, I felt bewildered and frustrated, but the people in the International Division helped a lot. They got a senior to help me with class registration, advise me on preparing for lectures and tutorials, and give me a tour of the campus. They also organised many activities, especially for international students, such as a movie night and barbecue. Thanks to their support, I quickly settled into the new environment and my studies.” –Lam San San, Accounting and Finance student Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #humansofcurtin #curtinmalaysia #1inBorneo #Vietnam #university #orientation #OWeekRocks photo 43 1 0 0 0 0 44 2 0 46 2018-10-26

“I graduated with a Bachelor of Resource Chemistry and I never imagined I would be doing something other than that. However, being where I am now and doing the job I’m doing is a great opportunity to learn something new. I enjoy being a planning officer although the work is not related to my degree. “Initially, it was challenging as this is my first job and I had no experience in the field, but thankfully I have great colleagues who are always willing to guide me and lend a helping hand when I need it. “What have I learned from my experience? Grab any opportunity that comes your way as it will impact you positively in one way or another. It opens you to new ideas and challenges and can be an excellent teacher. “I’m proud to be a Curtin Volunteer! and to be among those initiating the CV! Snap&Share project on campus. When I joined Curtin Malaysia, I got involved in clubs like the Curtin Volunteers! and AIESEC to continue my passion in volunteering. It has helped me gain a wider perspective about voluntary work and to become more adventurous. “Volunteering is a simple act and anyone can be a volunteer. It’s up to the individual. “I’m a proud recipient of Curtin University’s Excellence in Teaching and Innovation Award, Teacher of the Year Award, and Curtin Malaysia’s Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award. I also received Curtin University’s Best Lecturer – Students Choice Award in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016. “When it comes to teaching, I do it from my heart and always prioritise students’ learning and critical thinking. I respect my students as unique individuals and embark on measures to put them in charge of their learning. I always make sure to ask the students to be humane and sympathetic, and to be responsible for others just as their parents are responsible for them. “Every semester, I start my lectures by introducing the concept of relating opportunity cost to life where students calculate both the explicit and implicit cost of their studies. When they realise that their parents could have bought a BMW if they were selfish, students begin to appreciate the opportunity they have to further their studies, and to be sincere to their parents and society. “Although the standard consultation time is six hours, I always make it possible for students to meet me at any time during office hours. As a result, I’m able to create a conducive learning environment and meet their developmental, emotional and academic needs.” -Dr. Abey P Philip, senior lecturer in economics Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #humansofcurtin #curtinmalaysia #lecturer #economics #business #teaching photo 163 13 0 2 0 0 178 4 12 194 2018-11-29

“When I transferred to Curtin Malaysia from University of Indonesia to continue my double degree in chemical engineering, I thought I would have a hard time adapting to the new learning and living environment here. However, because of the great lecturers and teaching methods here, I managed to catch up quite easily. All the great friends I made here also helped me settle in quickly. “One of my most memorable and proudest moments at Curtin Malaysia was when my Indonesian friends and I performed a dance showcasing the Balinese, Sundanese and Batavian cultures called ‘Genjring Campursari’ during iFest 2017 and won the prize for best performance. This was followed by a prize for best overall country representation in 2018. I also awarded Best Dressed Female for two consecutive years. “Promoting my country through dance is gratifying and exhilarating. There are only a small number of Indonesians here at Curtin Malaysia but we have an association called Persatuan Pelajar Indonesia which is like a family. “Pursuing a double degree from Curtin Malaysia and University of Indonesia gave me the opportunity to land an internship during my three months break with two of Indonesia’s largest oil and gas companies, Pertamina and MedcoEnergi. It was really exciting being able to apply the knowledge I had acquired in my studies in a real-life work environment.” -Indira Zahra Zafira, Chemical Engineering Student Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #humansofcurtin #curtinmalaysia #1inBorneo #indonesia #chemicalengineering #engineering #culture photo 45 5 0 0 0 0 50 1 0 51 2018-12-12

“I fell in love with teaching as it grabbed me in its arms and led me around the world. My teaching career started in the Republic of Kazakhstan in the former Soviet Union. My motto became ‘I have textbooks and will travel’. Then I pursued teaching opportunities in universities in Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and the United States. I taught students from diverse cultures and backgrounds while sampling good food and sipping coffee from around the world. “In 2014, Curtin Malaysia offered me a teaching position. I thought how cool it is to live on the exotic island of Borneo – the land of lush, pristine rainforests teaming with untamed wildlife and (at one time) headhunters. In 2015, the university promoted me to head the Department of Finance and Banking. Of course, teaching remains my primary passion, where I teach difficult subjects like Derivative Securities and Microeconomic Theory. “Now, I juggle many things. I teach, conduct research, and lead my department. I am also an artist, runner, and scuba diver on the weekends. I sold several pieces of art to raise money for charity, ran several 10k races, and became a PADI divemaster. “Miri has some fantastic dive sites. I explore the world underwater and try to unravel its mysteries. I had a storm of fish swim around me like a whirlwind several times, and a school of barracuda darted past me baring their sharp teeth. I even made the newspaper when I helped a team of divers remove the ghost nets that were choking the coral and wildlife at one dive site. “Thus, I live life to its fullest. If we all can do one positive thing every day, we can hand our children a better world.” -Kenneth R. “Coming from Penang and now working in Kuala Lumpur, people often ask me why I chose to study at a university in Miri. I found Miri to be a very peaceful and beautiful place which provided me the perfect atmosphere to enjoy university life. You just have to experience it to know what a great place it is. “I also appreciated the fact that the courses offered at Curtin Malaysia are identical to those at the main campus in Perth and you get exactly the same degree. Furthermore, the courses are accredited by professional bodies nationally and internationally. There were many opportunities for learning beyond the classroom and labs and most of the lecturers were very friendly and approachable, always willing to go the extra mile to help students. “I was also fortunate to be involved in various events and societies. They helped me build soft skills such as working with people from different backgrounds, in event and project management, taking responsibility for your actions and public speaking, to name a few. “Pursuing my foundation year and degree at Curtin Malaysia has been my biggest challenge in life. When I first joined Curtin Malaysia in 2015, I was very apprehensive because it was my first time away from home and I was unsure about being able to adapt to the new environment and teaching methods. “But in time, I was able to adapt and one of my greatest joys of university life was being able to make friends with students from other countries. I enjoyed learning their languages and about their different cultures. I think the cultural diversity and culture of inclusiveness of the campus really helped me adapt. “The opportunity to participate in events organised by the various student clubs, the student council and the university was another factor. I have won multiple awards since I started participating in the events, including two Most Valuable Player and three Top Scorer awards in the futsal tournaments held every semester. Participating in the Curtin Cup, the biggest sporting event held annually, was also very memorable. “Curtin Malaysia has all the characteristics to help students grow and prepare for the working world. “In 2016, I joined the Student Council and I gained a lot of experience from that. However, in the beginning, it was rather hard balancing my time between my student council commitments, organising various events, and my studies. Trust me, managing events is not easy. You can be under a lot of pressure to meet deadlines and take responsibility for a lot of things. That left me very little time for a social life or getting enough sleep. “Anyway, as they say, ‘Time is a good teacher’. After a while, I practiced better time management and things got better. Also gained better communication skills. Both are very important skills, both in student life and the working world. With such skills and the knowledge and experience I’ve gained as a student at Curtin Malaysia, I learned to be more independent and started my own cosmetics business.” -Amanda Yong, Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) graduate Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #HumansofCurtin #CurtinMalaysia #business #accounting #graduate photo 27 1 1 0 0 0 29 3 0 32 2019-03-16

“I enrolled at Curtin Malaysia in 2012 determined to gain an experience that extended beyond getting a degree; a complete experience where I could interact with fellow students of different nationalities and cultures as well as grow as a person. “I was involved in many clubs and events, particularly the Curtin Environmental Club, Toastmasters, Model United Nations and the Borneo Youth Leadership Conference. Such extracurricular activities were not necessarily related to my courses, but what they really taught me was to be bold in taking risks and moving beyond my comfort zone. “Today, as an electrical engineer by day and a freelance writer and grassroots environmental activist by night, I realise how much my experience at Curtin Malaysia has prepared me for what I’m doing - in multi-tasking, managing commitments and, most importantly, working with people of diverse backgrounds in a respectful and empathetic manner. “Looking back, my most memorable times at Curtin Malaysia will always be the many breezy bicycle rides I made from my off-campus accommodation to the campus and getting to enjoy breathtaking sunsets whenever I had evening lectures, club meetings or exams!” -Rexy Prakash Chacko, electronic and communication engineering graduate, now electrical engineer with Motorola Solutions Malaysia Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #HumansofCurtin #CurtinMalaysia #Graduate #ElectricalEngineer #Engineering photo 13 0 0 0 0 0 13 1 1 15 2019-03-06

I enjoyed studying in the library, and the wide open spaces and beautiful surroundings helped relieve my stress and motivated me a lot. “I have been working in America since completing my degree, joining my friends and brother on the USA Work and Travel Program while waiting for graduation day. “Graduating from university to me is just a stage one goes through in one’s life journey, so I don’t really feel sad leaving Curtin Malaysia, and am rather looking forward to starting my professional journey.” –Lim Chee Keen, Accounting & Finance graduate. “Working at Curtin Malaysia is an excellent stage in my career path. I am quite familiar with Curtin as I took my PhD at Curtin Perth and I frequently visit the main campus to meet old friends. “I remember when I first arrived at Curtin Malaysia. It was very pleasant but also quite different to what I was accustomed to in big cities. Luckily, everyone here was very friendly and helpful and I felt right at home. The campus community is like a big family. I was also comforted by the wide variety of food here. I like to explore the food in the countries I visit. For me, the kolok mee, chicken rice and rice porridge are the best. “I have enjoyed teaching since I was in high school. Previously, I did voluntary work teaching maths and English to disadvantaged children in my neighborhood. I consider the ability to share knowledge a blessing and Curtin provides many opportunities for me to develop my full potential in teaching and research. It is not difficult to work with Curtin students as they are all very bright students. I am very touched whenever I read comments on my teaching from my students. “By conducting research, I can contribute to society and learn something all the time. Fortunately, I have the opportunity to serve as an associate editor for IEEE Access, a prestigious electrical engineering journal. My ambition is to invent technology which can solve fundamental problems for society. I believe we should never stop learning; we should make use our ability to do and create useful things.” -Dr. Filbert Hilman Juwono, electrical and computer engineering lecturer, Faculty of Engineering and Science Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #HumansofCurtin #CurtinMalaysia #PhD #Perth #Miri #engineering photo 76 3 0 0 0 0 79 4 11 94 2019-03-24

We offer Curtin’s highly-specialised 4-year Bachelor of Engineering in Petroleum Engineering (Hons.) degree developed in collaboration with global players like Chevron, Woodside, Shell, BHP Billiton and BP. Introduced at Curtin Malaysia in 2011, it has been further refined to meet the needs of the national O&G sector with the involvement of the likes of Petronas Carigali, Shell, Nippon Oil, Murphy Oil, Schlumberger and Talisman. Our graduates are immediately employable in the industry upon graduation and indeed most of them find employment even before graduation. This is largely due to the quality of the degree, which is double-accredited by Engineers Australia and the Engineering Accreditation Council of Malaysia. All this is, of course, buoyed by the fact that Curtin ranks No. 2 among universities worldwide for Mineral & Mining Engineering in the 2019 QS Rankings by Subject. “I’ve often been asked about my lifetime ambition by many people, including my parents. Geology is my greatest passion, and through my interactions with my mentors at Curtin Malaysia, Dr. Afroz Ahmad Shah, Dr. Nagarajan Ramasamy and Dr. M. V. Prasanna, I became particularly fascinated with earthquakes and disasters. I have also done a lot of personal study that has given me a deeper understanding and desire to learn more on earthquake geology. “The 5th June 2015 earthquake in Ranau, Sabah was an eye-opener for many, including geoscientists. It showed that our understanding of the earth is still vague. We can mitigate damage from earthquakes if scientists and the authorities work together, be aware of vulnerabilities, consider possible scenarios, and simultaneously educate people. “Prediction of earthquakes remains a major challenge but we can learn to live with earthquakes by observing strict construction standards, conducting careful geological evaluation of building sites, and public education.” -Navakanesh M. “I am British and come from a city in England called Stoke-on-Trent. I have been in Malaysia since 2015 and for me, Curtin Malaysia and Miri where the campus is located, is a relatively more relaxed place compared to England. “As for my teaching methods, mirroring the act of learning is simply a psychological strategy to get students to mirror your efforts at learning. For example, I engage with my students by learning their mother tongues and often use semantics such as “lah” and “ni ming bai ma?” (do you understand?). This creates a comfortable environment when I conduct my lectures and seminars. “This strategy has enabled me to break the “power distance syndrome” which is a huge problem in Asia with regards to learning. Moreover, it is a proven method as it enabled me to win the Student Choice Award in the year 2017.” -Dr. Jude Emelifeonwu, Head of Department and Senior Lecturer of the Department of Management, Faculty of Business Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #HumansofCurtin #CurtinMalaysia #Management #Business #Lecturer photo 90 15 0 0 0 0 105 7 5 117 2019-04-05

“I am part of the sales team at Japanese real estate digital marketing firm, handling inbound and outbound sales, finding potential clients, meeting with them, and afterwards, closing sales. So I spend much of my time analysing the property market and building relationships. “As part of an international sales team, I find the work environment simply amazing. The management really takes the time to develop their employees, ensuring that they take full ownership of their work and are equipped with all the necessary business skills to carry out their work effectively. The company focuses on building trust and working as a family. “It might seem odd that I’m working in sales when my course at Curtin Malaysia was in accounting, but the course was not all about accounting. It was quite holistic, with non-accounting units that also prepared for work in the corporate world. It also helped that I interned with the company as a student and learned enough to be offered a permanent position right after graduation. “Working in Malaysia after graduation has always been my plan and I consider myself very lucky to be given the opportunity. I really enjoyed my student experience at the university and now, as a working professional, I have the opportunity to learn a different aspect of life in Malaysia. “Curtin Malaysia has a unique and friendly environment, full of diversity with students and staff from over 50 countries. One of the occasions where students of all nationalities come together each year is the annual John Curtin Weekend organised by the Curtin Volunteers!, where we would carry out community projects with villagers in rural communities near Miri. That was one of my most memorable experiences as a student of Curtin Malaysia. “As a proud graduate of the university, I would like to thank all my lecturers and peers for all their help and advice with my projects and assignments through the years. I really couldn’t have done it without all of you!”–Loh Ying Sheng, Chemical Engineering graduate Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #HumansofCurtin #CurtinMalaysia #JCW #engineering #ChemicalEngineering #graduate Contributor: Glen Pengiran photo 10 0 0 0 0 0 10 1 0 11 2019-04-28

“My association with Curtin started in 2005 when I did my MEng and then a PhD at Curtin University in Perth. I joined Curtin Malaysia in 2009 and having been here for almost 10 years, I can proudly call Miri (and Curtin Malaysia) my second home after my native Indonesia. “To me, the best part about being ‘Mirian’ and a ‘Curtinian’ is meeting and living with friendly people of different nationalities and backgrounds. Miri is also a place where I can enjoy a diversity of cuisine and my favourite tropical fruits. It may be a relatively small city but is very peaceful and offers a simpler but happier life. “Curtin Malaysia is a well set up campus. At Curtin Perth, I used to enjoy walking around the campus and having lunch sitting on the grass under the trees, at Curtin Malaysia I also enjoy having nice walks and seeing the beautiful garden and lake scenery. “The exciting thing about working as an academic is that every year, we see new faces in our classes. Watching them progressing and transforming from student engineers to graduate engineers is very satisfying. Some have become my good friends and even my colleagues. Knowing that my ex-students are doing well in their lives and careers is the greatest reward.” -Dr. Agus Saptoro, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Science Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #humansofcurtin #curtinmalaysia #1inBorneo #CurtinMY20Years #engineering #Campus #academic photo 76 9 0 0 0 0 85 5 0 90 2019-05-10

“Studying at Curtin Malaysia was very memorable and worthwhile for me. It gave me the opportunity to get a world-class Curtin degree at more affordable fees in Malaysia compared to doing the same course in Australia. I still got a global education studying with students from all over the world, which was further enriched by unique experiences within the local community. “I took the Bachelor of Technology in Computer Systems and Networking because I had always been interested in IT. My elder brother, who graduated from Curtin Malaysia back in 2005, told me a lot about the university and the fact he successfully graduated from the same course motivated me to study at Curtin Malaysia as well. Curtin’s reputation for excellence and innovation was another reason I chose to study at Curtin Malaysia.” -David Agbonjague Omondiagbe, Computer Systems & Networking graduate Meet other #humansofcurtinmalaysia at #HumansofCurtin #CurtinMalaysia #technology #IT #graduate Contributor: Herbert Ho photo 22 2 0 0 0 0 24 4 0 28 2019-05-20
