Tip #5 Talk to your tutor With friends to make, lectures to attend and societies to join getting to know your tutor can become low on the list of priorities. If you can prevent this from happening and actually take the time to establish a relationship with your tutor it will pay off. Even if you don’t need it immediately, there will be a time when you require their academic guidance or pastoral support and if you already have a mutual trust and understanding it will be much more straightforward. Find out more at: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/numed/ photo 7 0 0 0 0 0 7 0 0 7 2017-10-28
Tip #4 Look ahead to lectures Looking ahead to lectures means more than managing your schedule and knowing your timetable, it means preparation. In many cases students spend hours deciphering notes and watching recaps (lecture recording software) because they haven’t fully understood a lecture. This is generally because they aren’t familiar with the topic beforehand. Coming to a lecture prepared with a basic understanding will mean you can fully benefit. This is because you will be able to focus on getting your brain around the more challenging aspects of the subject and ask the lecturer then and there if there are still parts you don’t fully understand. Tip #3 Leverage learning styles Adjusting to life at university is also about growing up to become an adult learner, being self-motivated and organised. At medical school there is a notable shift away from the didactic style associated with school towards independent, self-directed study. A key to mastering this is to think about how to leverage different study styles for effective learning. This should range from visual, aural and written forms of learning, for example it is often more effective to master technical and technical skills by watching a video demonstration rather that reading written notes on developing specific techniques. However everyone learns differently and it’s worth experimenting early on in medical school to work out what is best for you. Tip #2 Accept adjustment Starting a university course marks a new beginning, for some people it means living away from home for the first time and leaving friends and family behind. Remember everyone is in the same boat and whether you’ve got to do your laundry, get to know a new city, or manage your living expenses for the first time take comfort in the fact that you are not alone. It’s a part of growing up and it will come naturally in the end, in fact it will probably all happen far too fast. Find out more at: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/numed/ photo 3 0 0 0 0 0 3 0 0 3 2017-10-25

Tip #1 Mastering Medical School Day one at medical school; only 1824 to go. Becoming a doctor can be a daunting prospect, and as well as the five years intensive practical and theoretical study that lie ahead, there’s also the financial investment and the steps towards adult independence to tackle. Getting it right is absolutely crucial in securing your lifelong dream of becoming a doctor, so here’s how to thrive rather than only just survive in medical school. Tip #6 Strike a sense of balance Everyone knows that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. It’s no different when you are studying to become a doctor because the most successful ones also have an understanding of the real world. Never study beyond midnight, you won’t actually learn anything. In fact the optimum learning time is 45 minutes, and then it’s time to move to a new topic or take a break. And taking a break doesn’t just mean five minutes to make a cup of tea, a break should mean time spent on other personal interests such as sport, socialising or sitting back and relaxing. Find out more at: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/numed/ photo 4 0 0 0 0 0 4 1 0 5 2017-10-29
Tip #7 Remember your reasons There will be times when things get too much and lectures, seminars and hours spent in the library seem endless. Remember what you are there for, it’s not to study medicine, it’s to become a doctor. This is part of your journey to becoming one of Tomorrow’s Doctors so that you can thrive in your career and help others survive. Find out more at: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/numed/ photo 4 0 0 0 0 0 4 2 0 6 2017-10-30
Tip #8 Make the most of formative assessments "Studying my notes 10 times is probably the best way to prepare for exams." Wrong! The best way of preparing for exams is to make the most of the formative assessment opportunities that will be offered whilst you are at medical school. Also, be sure to attend the question and answer sessions that we offer throughout the year. Students are also advised to make good use of online resources such as PeerWise, which students use to create and to explain their understanding of course related assessment questions, and to answer and discuss questions created by their peers. Tip #9 Teamwork and Leadership Studying medicine at NUMed is a very ‘hands on’, experience and you will spend plenty of time in practical sessions in our Clinical Skills or Anatomy Laboratories. Medicine is all about teamwork and sharing information. You have to be able to cooperate with others. The practical sessions give you a golden opportunity to hone that teamwork and study in groups. You’ll also have plenty of opportunity to develop your leadership and teamwork during discussion groups, ethical discussions, critical appraisals and through co-curricular activities. Tip #10 Take time to engage in stress-relieving activities Everyone in your group will be facing the same amount of stress, but some people deal with it better than others. You might notice some students walk around with a frown, whereas others wear huge smiles. How is that possible if they are all facing the same pressure? Again, it is time management. If you have extra time, you are able to reduce stress. Spend time with friends, or do something on your own that makes you feel better. Activities like exercise, yoga, listening to calm music, talking to your parents or praying -- there is something out there that makes you feel better. Find it and do it. Do not let the stress affect your studies, relationships and, most importantly, health. Find out more at: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/numed/ photo 2 0 0 0 0 0 2 1 0 3 2017-11-02

"Why go all the way to UK when you can have the same high quality UK medical education here in Malaysia? It might even be better because NUMed has a whole campus dedicated to medical sciences education and this can be seen during their Open Day. I was impressed by how complete NUMed facilities are and the friendliness of the staff and students during NUMed Open Day in 2016. My parents came to the Open Day without me the year before and I was surprised that the staff remembered them! Just like everybody else, I was also awestruck by the dashing Mr. Sven, the talking manikin, acting as a simulated patient. Since I plan to pursue the MBBS programme in NUMed, I decided that joining NUMed Foundation programme would be a great idea to build solid ground for the medical education. And after completing the foundation programme, I’m glad to say that I was right! Even though I was in the first cohort of the foundation programme, but the dedicated teaching team was prepared and everything went well. I find the syllabus more relevant and tailored towards the medical and biomedical path. I came in the foundation programme lacking presenting skills and I’m happy to have improved over the course of the programme. After experiencing a couple of boarding schools, NUMed accommodation in Horizon Residence Apartment is the best! After a long day in campus, I can take a dip in the swimming pool or relax on the rooftop garden. Students get 24-hour support from NUMed accommodation office. I always feel safe because NUMed staff as well as the apartment’s guards patrol the apartment regularly. At one time I was locked out of my apartment at 5 am, and all it took was a phone call for NUMed staff to assist me within 5 minutes. The apartment is always comfy to study because NUMed provides weekly cleaning. Transport to and fro campus, shopping mall and accommodation is no problem too because I know I can depend on NUMed’s reliable shuttle bus. To sum it up, I think NUMed is the right choice for students because it has excellent learning experience, complete facilities and conducive accommodation. My student life in NUMed has been mostly sweet, thanks to the wonderful support from my family, friends, staff and seniors. I was impressed back then and I still am! NUMed has never failed to amaze me." Interprofessional education (IPE) occurs when students or members of two or more professions learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care (CAIPE, 2013). Medical science has noted that patient care is a complex process and does not only involve a single person (doctor); it is in fact a multidisciplinary approach; therefore, a future doctor must be ready to collaborate with members of multidisciplinary team (MDT) to be able to carry out his job effectively. For the past two years, NUMed has been collaborating with Degree in Pharmacy of University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM) in delivering IPE. For this academic year alone, we were able to conduct the following sessions: 1. The Multidisciplinary Team: Supporting Equality & Diversity 2. Management of Conditions: Nutrition and Malnutrition 3. Meeting Service Users 4. Management of Conditions: Respiratory Disorders 5. Introduction to Medication Error Analysis We are looking forward expanding our sessions and collaborating with other members of the multidisciplinary team for the coming years. "NUMed Foundation programme is an exceptionally excellent platform for students who intend to pursue medical career. As it is tailor-made for the medical profession, it equips students with the essential skills and knowledge, and provides us great insight into our future work environment. One unique challenge is that the lecturers advocate independent learning, which in fact help sharpen our thinking skills and widen our mental horizon. We learn to be innovative and resourceful along the way. "It takes a certain kind of crazy to dive into this world of medicine, and the degrees we just received are proof that each of us is a little bit nuts. Our job is a big deal. To be honest, I must say that I am very afraid of being a doctor. The next couple of years may prove to be even more difficult than the 5 years we have just finished. Will we make it? Yes we will! We will turn to the same folks that sustained us through medical school; our family, friends, mentors and more importantly, our patients. The day we graduate is as much for them as it is for us, so my only request is take some time today to say "thank you" to all of them. Lastly, congratulations Class of 2018! "During the first two years of studies in NUMed, we were equipped with fundamental knowledge and basic laboratory skills of biomedical sciences field, from a series of lectures and practical classes delivered by our dedicated lecturers. During the final-year studies in Newcastle University, we deepened our knowledge in different disease-related topics according to our interest. We also had the opportunity to conduct our final-year research projects under the supervision of professional researchers. I really enjoyed doing my final-year project in the research institute where I developed research skills and soft-skills needed for me to pursue my career in research. Newcastle University never let me down in providing high-quality education and professional training for me in the field of Biomedical Sciences. I believe that the knowledge and research skills that I gained throughout the course will support my new role as a Biomedical Research Fellow in NUMed." Hear what Newcastle UK student thinks about his experience studying at Malaysia campus. "As an international student in the UK, I've never been one to turn down the opportunity to travel and study at the same time, so choosing to participate in the first Exchange between Newcastle’s two medical campuses was an easy choice. And how wonderful it has been! Meeting the students and staff at NUMed has given me a greater perspective on my life. The world, like the human body/experience, is a complex and beautiful thing, and I have thoroughly appreciated getting to learn about both during my time in Malaysia. I look forward to keeping every last bit of this experience in my mind and in my heart as I continue to grow as a person and a future medical practitioner." Hear what Newcastle UK student thinks about his experience studying at Malaysia campus. "I took a semester abroad in the 2nd year of my MBBS degree at the Newcastle University campus in Malaysia. The hospitality of the students and staff there made it a very welcoming and enjoyable experience and the opportunity to do placements in local healthcare settings provided me with a greater understanding of both the holistic treatment of patients, and the wider challenge of managing resources. The campus is located in Johor Bahru - the southernmost district of Malaysia - and it’s close proximity to both Senai International Airport and Changi Airport in Singapore allows for more exploration of Malaysia and other parts of Asia during holidays!"
